Ideal for anyone wanting an introduction to meditation, as well as those wanting to refresh their practice. It includes practical instructions for developing a strong meditation practice: good sitting posture, how to relate with breath as the object of meditation, what to do when thoughts come up, and starting a regular meditation practice at home. |

Sakyong's Birthday Celebration
We will begin the evening with the Sadhana of Mahamudra and multiple recitations of the Supplication for the Longevity of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. A reception, with birthday cake, poetry & toasts, will follow!
If you are inspired to make offerings of poetry or toasts, or can help with the evening, please respond here and the coordinator will contact you.
Read a message from the Sakyong Wangmo below:
10 Nov 2008
Dear Members of the Shambhala Family,
On this special occasion of the Sakyong's birthday, I would love for our community to gather together as one mandala and family. Since the lama is the source of blessing and protection for the mandala, Rinpoche's birthday is a wonderful opportunity to show our love and appreciation, and to offer him our devotion and well wishes. Let us make heartfelt prayers and aspirations for his health, well-being, and longevity, since it is the Sakyong to whom we owe the greatest gratitude.
In the last few years of being with Rinpoche, I can see for myself how dedicated and kind he is towards the Shambhala mandala. Therefore, we should be tremendously indebted to him. It always amazes me that our Sakyong was born in Bodhgaya, the place of the Buddha's enlightenment. The anniversary of his birth should indeed be a day of both practice and celebration, so please join me in celebrating it!
Yours in the vision of Shambhala,
Sakyong Wangmo, Khandro Tseyang |

UMDZE & GATEKEEPER TRAINING
Learn, Refresh, Advance
UMDZE & GATEKEEPER TRAINING
Three Tuesdays, 8-9 pm
With Lesa Ricci, Evan Trimble & Martin Heltai
Pre-requisite: Completion of a Weekthun or Shambhala Training Level III
In addition to timekeeping and leading chants, taking the Umdze seat is a rich "on-the-spot" practice that heightens one's own meditation practice while holding the space of practice for others. As such, it is a powerful practice of arousing ones' dignity, courage and compassion! Gatekeeping is not merely meditating facing a different direction - It is awareness practice in action! The Gatekeeper calls the sangha to practice, protects the practice environment from distractions, and ideally provides drumming for the chants.
The upcoming training is intended for both new candidates and current volunteers. It is divided into three separate sections to provide an an opportunity to learn, refresh or advance your Umdze or Gatekeeping abilities depending on which parts you need. Attending the training does not obligate you volunteer!
Tuesday, November 18th, 8:00 - 9:00pm: Includes the View, Decorum, Ritual Detail, and Responsibilities of Umdze Practice
Tuesday, December 2nd, 8:00 - 9:00pm: Includes Chant Leading Instruction & Practice
Tuesday, December 16th, 8:00 - 9:00pm: Includes the View, Decorum, and Responsibilities of Gatekeeper Practice; Drumming Instruction and Practice
Our Shambhala Center is a practice community where volunteers are the engine that keeps the Center vibrant. Our ever increasing offerings continue to place a strain on the existing corps of Umdze & Gatekeeper volunteers. Each month it is usually the same five to ten individuals who step forward to serve in these capacities on Tuesday Evening and Sunday Mornings. So please consider taking a leap, we really need you!
Please sign up ahead of time by emailing Martin Heltai, Practice & Study Rota Coordinator at martin.heltai@sacredordinary.com |

Nyinthun and Maitri Bhavana
Our Sunday morning practice, open to all, consists of periods of silent sitting meditation interspersed with brief periods of walking meditation. We begin the morning with opening chants. You can come for the entire morning or for just part. First-time meditators are encouraged to arrive at 9 am and meet with a meditation instructor for orientation and initial instruction.
On the last Nyinthun Sunday of each month we will include the optional practice of Maitri Bhavana. Maitri Bhavana is a meditation on loving kindness that is practiced for those who are seriously ill, either physically or mentally. It cultivates our compassion through taking on the sense of suffering of others, provides an opportunity to share our health with them, and acknowledges our deep interconnectedness. A list is posted at the Center for any of us to add the names and illnesses of relatives and friends who are seriously ill, so they can be explicitly included in the practice. You should include someone because you feel a personal concern for their suffering, such as a relative dying of cancer or suffering from clinical depression. It would not be appropriate, for example, to include someone who has the flu or a sprained ankle. You may also add them to the list by sending an email to Lesa.Ricci@portlandshambhala.org. Be sure to include both the name of the individual as well as the illness. You can submit the same name(s) each month if you like, but we do not "carry over" |
